Academic suspension for health reasons is an alternative for current UC students who have serious health problems, either physically or mentally and that, due to their intensity and duration, severely limit functionality, preventing the student from regularly pursuing his or her studies.

Who can suspend for health reasons?

Current undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate students and students in the process of obtaining a degree up to a maximum of one year from their last course registration.

Academic suspension for health reasons must be requested directly by the student, only in exceptional cases, in which a student is hospitalized or in a health situation that makes it impossible for him/her to suspend by him/herself, can be carried out by a third party (relative) on his/her behalf, authorized via power of attorney.

Requests for suspension due to health managed by Academic Units are not received.

Exceptionally, Parent/Guardian may also request suspension on behalf of a student who is hospitalized or who is a minor (under 18 years of age).

What are the deadlines?

Requests for suspension for health reasons must be made online.

The deadlines for the formal submission of applications, which involves the delivery of the required documentation complete and without errors, are:

First semester suspension: Start date of classes for the first semester according to the academic calendar until July 15.

Second semester suspension: Start date of classes for the second semester until December 15

In the event that the end date for requesting some of the measures corresponds to a non-working day (weekend), the end date of the term will be the business day prior to the end of the deadline.

After a request for suspension for health is formally submitted, the student cannot retract it, as the request is irreversible from this moment on. The student will be notified in his/her UC email, when his/her request for a health suspension is formally entered.

How much can I request to suspend for health reasons?

The request for suspension for health reasons can be requested for one or two academic semesters, but indefinite suspension can also be requested. The Health Suspensions Commission reviews the documents submitted and evaluates whether the health situation presented by the student is pertinent to the requested measure.

The indefinite mental health suspension is a measure granted by the Health Suspensions Commission on an exceptional basis for students who have a serious and/or chronic mental health disorder with a reserved prognosis, therefore, it is estimated that there is no clarity of the time that will be needed for their treatment and recovery.

What are the Commission’s possible rulings on a request for suspension on health grounds?

The Health Suspensions and Reinstatement Commission may decide, based on the student’s health history:

  • Approve the requested measure
  • Approve a measure other than the one requested by the student (e.g., student requests 2 academic semesters and the Health Suspension Commission approves 1 academic semester, etc.)
  • Reject the request

What happens when a health suspension measure is in force?

When a request for suspension due to health for one or two academic semesters is approved, upon completion of the validity of the measure, the student automatically returns to his/her status as a regular student, so they must enroll courses in the corresponding semester.

When a request for indefinite health suspension is approved, the student must always request reinstatement to his/her academic activity. This is a procedure that has specific deadlines and conditions that are indicated in the link Reintegro a la Universidad. Students who have an indefinite health suspension in force cannot return to their academic activity if they have not requested and been approved for reinstatement by the Committee.

How long can I suspend for health reasons?

The request for suspension for health reasons can be requested for one or two academic semesters, but indefinite suspension can also be requested. The Health Suspensions Commission reviews the documents submitted and evaluates whether the health situation presented by the student is pertinent to the requested measure.

The Indefinite mental health suspension is a measure that the Health Suspension Commission grants on an exceptional basis For students who present with a severe and/or chronic mental health disorder with a reserved prognosis, therefore, it is estimated that there is no clarity of the time that will be needed for their treatment and recovery.
