The sports teams are a privileged formative instance within the university, because through practice, athletes acquire values and skills that are beneficial for their integral development. Currently at UC there are more than 30 UC teams, which cover some twenty disciplines.

UC SELECTIONS

A total of 21 sports disciplines are developed by the Pontifical Catholic University, around which 38 sports teams are formed to officially represent the UC. Composed of more than 900 young UC athletes who represent our institution in national and international competitions and sporting events. Of the total, more than 200 athletes are in the Elite category, i.e., selected or pre-selected nationally in their disciplines.

ATHLETES, AMBASSADORS OF CHILE AND THE UC

As students, all UC athletes must combine their academic and athletic responsibilities. Since our flag bearers are ambassadors, inside and outside the UC, they must be exemplary role models, disseminators of the values that sport represents – excellence, commitment, perseverance, discipline and responsibility – and promoters of healthy lifestyle habits.

In this context, at the end of 2018 the UC athletes organized themselves by forming the Student Sports Center (CDE), which is currently led by Sebastián Pineda, Geography student and selected Tennis player. Since then, they have not only been able to represent the voice of the selected UC players before authorities and the rest of the university community, but they have also carried out interesting activities and interventions, such as the beautification of the San Joaquín Gymnasium and an artistic intervention on the role of women in sports.

ELITE ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP

In order to reconcile both roles, athletes have several support systems within the university, such as priority registration for courses, the possibility of registering for a smaller number of credits each semester or taking tests and exams on a deferred basis, in order to meet their sports obligations, especially when they have to go to tournaments abroad. They also have the option to apply for the Elite Athlete Scholarship, which consists of a fee reduction of up to 50%, as long as they demonstrate good academic and athletic performance during the current year.
